WELCOME!

If you’re interested in business and current affairs then this course is for you!

You need to have at least 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above (including English and Maths)

THE COURSE (1 year)

On this subject you learn the theories and techniques that are used to make decisions in business organisations.

You will have 4 hours of business lessons a week. At the end of the year there are two 90 minute exams.

THE THEMES

Theme 1 concentrates on the key business concepts, issues and skills involved in starting and running a small business. It provides a framework for students to explore core concepts through the lens of an entrepreneur setting up a business.

It will be important to develop an understanding of the interdependent nature of business activity through interactions between business operations, finance, marketing and human resources, as well as the relationship between the business and the environment in which it operates.

Theme 2 examines how a business develops beyond the start-up phase. It focuses on the key business concepts, issues and decisions used to grow a business, with emphasis on aspects of marketing, operations, finance and human resources. Theme 2 also considers the impact of the wider world on the decisions a business makes as it grows.

Like theme 1, it will be important to develop an understanding of the interdependent nature of business activity through interactions between business operations, finance, marketing and human resources, as well as the relationship between the business and the environment in which it operates. Students must understand how these functional areas influence business activity and how interdependencies and relationships between them underpin business decisions.

READING LIST

There is not a text book for this course. Two websites with lots of interesting information are:

  • Tutor2U
  • GCSE Bitesize

It is also a good idea to read a news website, such as the BBC, or a newspaper, such as The Guardian

ACTIVITY IDEAS

  • Create a Sway presentation about an idea for a new product (perhaps this could be a new chocolate bar, or maybe a product to make life easier during the lockdown)
  • Create a leaflet about an entrepreneur of your choice.  This could explore their motivation and the skills they used to develop their business(es).
